FDA passes new policy to reduce antibiotic use in livestock

The FDA has taken a step towards addressing one of the unknown threats to public health. They have passed a new policy restricting the use of antibiotics in healthy livestock. Antibiotics should only be used to treat sick animals and monitored by veterinarians.
The concern is that using antibiotics in livestock is contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Approximately 100,000 people die each year from hospital-acquired antibiotic resistant infections.
