District 3 police station briefly closed due to staph infection; Office of one officer was disinfected; officials say incident was isolated

Prince George's County Police District 3 headquarters in Palmer Park closed for 30 minutes Tuesday so an office of one officer diagnosed with a staph infection could be disinfected.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, staphylococcus bacteria, known as staph, can cause skin infections similar to red boils or pimples and respond to antibiotic treatment while some strains can develop an antibiotic resistance.

Cpl. Clinton Copeland, a Prince George's police spokesman, said the officer was assigned to the clerk's office, is on leave and likely will not return until his infection is clear. Copeland did not have the officer's current status or know the extent of his contact with other officers and the public.

"It's an isolated incident, it's been handled and we've been open for business," Copeland said.
