The Fight Against Drug Resistance Must Go Global
June 17, 2010
According to a nonprofit US policy research group, efforts to battle major diseases in the developing world are leading to increased drug resistance. The result is a need for a coordinated global campaign to maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs.
Millions of children in the developing world die each year from resistant strains of common diseases. These include such diseases as malaria, pneumonia, other respiratory infections, and dysentery.
The report, The Race Against Drug Resistance, is urging the World Health Organization to take lead and is requesting drug companies, governments and healthcare providers to get involved.
According to the report, there is a strong association between the volume of drug use and the emergence of resistance. An example is the United States hospitals where MRSA has increased from about 2% to more than 50% between 1974 and 2004.
