AVON - Two siblings enrolled in different Avon schools have contracted MRSA, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, a highly contagious staph infection resistant to many antibiotics. Employees at Avon Middle School and Avon Heritage South Elementary School have taken precautionary measures in order to ensure the MRSA infection does not spread to other students, Avon Middle School principal Craig Koehler said...
Although he is not sure of the exact date when the student will be allowed to return to Avon Heritage, Call said the sibling had been on antibiotics for 48 hours as of Wednesday morning, and is no longer contagious. After the student is given a clean bill of health and returns to school, the child will be required to be checked out by the school nurse for the first three to five days in order to make sure all wounds are covered and clean, Call said.
In order to keep the MRSA infection from spreading, students are being encouraged to wash their hands often and keep any open cuts or scrapes clean and bandaged. Students are also being asked not to touch other people's bandages or cuts, and are being encouraged not to share personal items, Call said.
